The first-ever Miss Indigenous Canada pageant goes this weekend.

Twenty-six women, aged 18 to 30, representing communities across the country, are competing at the event at Six Nations of the Grand River.

Jaida Gregg of Thunder Bay is among them.

She is representing her home community of Lac Seul First Nation.

Her pageant bio states she is a registered nurse working at Independent First Nations Alliance Tribal Council and intends to continue her education this fall in pursuit of a Master of Public Health, with a focus on Indigenous and Northern Health.

The event was created to provide young Indigenous women an opportunity to celebrate their abilities and achievements.

Contestants are judged in four categories that include an interview, a personal essay, a traditional presentation and a community presentation.

The three-day event started on Thursday with workshops, activities, guest speakers and museum tours.

The winner will be named on Saturday.
