The Women’s Shelter — Saakaate House and the Kenora Thistles are teaming up to help the community build character.
This hockey season, several Kenora Thistles teams will be wearing warm-up shirts with different sayings as part of a campaign to raise awareness about the importance of shaping character and becoming a good person.

The U11 AA Thistles shirts will read “Respect Is Our Game”.

The U13 AA Thistles shirts will read “Champions Choose Respect”.

The U15 AA Thistles shirts will read “Character, Not Just Skill”.

The U18 ‘AAA’ Thistles shirts will read “Set the Tone”.
According to the Women’s Shelter, the initiative is a part its Coaching Boys Into Men program, which is meant to teach that “while skills matter on the ice, character matters for life.”
In a post on social media Saakaate House says…
“Respect, empathy, accountability, and leadership are skills every young person needs. Team sport is a powerful place to build these values (and) when youth learn how to communicate, manage emotions, support one another, and treat others with dignity, they are developing the foundation for health relationships and violence prevention throughout their entire lives.”
