Seven Generations Education Institute gifted $10 million

The charitable foundation set up by Mastercard is recognizing the impact Seven Generations Education Institute (SGEI) has had on the region.

The Mastercard Foundation has gifted it $10 million.

Seven Gens was one of 30 post-secondary institutions receiving funding in recognition of their achievements and impact in education for Indigenous youth across Canada.

Chief Executive Officer Brent Tookenay says elated by the gift.

“This recognition reflects the vision and hard work of our learners, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and staff who carry forward the responsibility of revitalizing language, culture and education for future generations,” says Tookenay.

“We are deeply grateful to the Mastercard Foundation for walking alongside us in this journey.”

The Institute will use the money toward maintaining and expanding programming.

SGEI and the Mastercard Foundation have partnered on other programs.

This has included the Adult Anishinaabemowin Revitalization program and Azhemiinigoziwin (Women’s Transitions Program), allowing students to reconnect with Anishinaabe language and culture.

“This gift is not only recognition of the work that has been done but an invitation for partnership to continue building a hopeful future together,” added Naomi Field, Chair of SGEI’s Board of Directors.

“It strengthens our ability to provide pathways into higher education, employment, and community leadership while remaining grounded in Anishinaabe language, culture, and values.”
