‘Significant loss’ reported in Jasper, Alta., amid wildfire

Residents in Jasper are dealing with their worst nightmare, according to Alberta’s premier.

A massive wildfire roared into the community Wednesday with flames hundreds of feet high.

Danielle Smith told reporters Thursday that up to half of the buildings in the town may have been destroyed.

“We share the sense of loss with all of those who live in the town, who care for it, and who have helped build it,” said an emotional Smith.

Significant loss is being reported, though officials said the full extent of damage is currently unknown.

Photos and videos posted to social media show many buildings in the community reduced to rubble.

Smith also expressed gratitude to first responders who have been working to battle the flames.

“Once again, you’ve put yourselves on the front lines in a show of true heroism. Thank you for your bravery and your commitment to keeping Albertans safe,” she added.

About 25,000 people were evacuated from the town and Jasper National Park. Officials said there have been no reported injuries.
