Foster care can sound overwhelming. But in northwestern Ontario, one of the most meaningful childhood memories for a young woman in care was simply having her hair brushed.
It wasn’t a trip or an expensive gift. It was the feeling that someone was taking care of her.
Christa Little of Kenora-Rainy River District Child and Family Services says those everyday moments can stay with a child for decades. A seat at the dinner table, a family game night or a ride to practice can help a child feel safe, included and cared for.
That’s why KRRCFS wants people to know foster parents do not need to be perfect. They just need to be open, flexible and willing to make room in their lives for a child.
For children in care, the small things can mean everything.
