Students and teachers head back to school next week

It’s back to school time across much of northwestern Ontario.

Teachers return to school on Tuesday for a professional development day, and students head back to class on Wednesday.

Christy Radbourne is the Director of Education of the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board and says despite a cut in their budget, it won’t affect student services.

“We have a number of initiatives ongoing with math and attendance that are critically important to us,” says Radbourne in a recent interview.

“Those jobs and those pieces supported by Jordan’s Principle funding have been picked up with other funding we have with the board.”

Radbourne says they aren’t the only school board affected by the cut in Jordan’s Principle funding, but it’s not going affect what they do in the classroom.

“It’s really making sure that we find efficiencies.  We don’t want to reduce any sort of student support or classroom support, and that’s where our priorities lay.  We deferred a number of projects that we were able to do next year, so that we could make sure we could service kids and make sure they came first.”

The cut in Jordan’s Principal funding has affected a number of educational assistant jobs for all school boards in the area.
