Tariff relief coming to newly impacted Ontario businesses

The government of Ontario is expanding its Protect Ontario Financing Program (POFP) to industries affected by the latest round of American tariffs.

“No matter what President Trump sends our way, we’ll have your backs,” said Ontario Premier Doug Ford from a podium in Hamilton on Monday.

The financing program was conceived of during the first round of American tariffs last year, and is designed to provide relief to businesses that are seeing heavy disruptions due to the trade war.

The POFP covers expenses including lease payments, utility payments, and payroll expenses, allowing affected companies to maintain their workforces.

Newly impacted sectors include mechanical and electrical equipment and machinery, plastic and paper products, alcohol, furniture, and more.

Ford took the opportunity to back Prime Minister Carney, saying he fully supports “this decision to walk away from a bad deal that would have hurt Canadian workers and undermined Canadian sovereignty. And he has my full support to hit back tariff for tariff, dollar for dollar.”

More details of the POFP, including eligibility for businesses, are available here.
