Update 7:00 p.m.: Tornado watches lifted across northwestern Ontario

A tornado watch has been lifted in northwestern Ontario.

Environment Canada put the rare advisory in place covering several communities from Fort Frances to Sioux Lookout around midday on Tuesday.

It was due to a line of potential intense thunderstorms pushing through the region.

According to the national forecaster, tornado watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce a twister.

Severe thunderstorm watches were in place as well,
but have since been lifted.
