Dryden city council needs to know the risks involved in putting a deep geological nuclear waste facility in the region.
That’s the feeling of Sylvia Green-Guenette from We the Nuclear Free North.
She made a deputation to city council Monday night and says prior to taking money from the Nuclear Waste Management Organization, there are things they need to know about radioactive nuclear waste.
“It is my hope that you, Mayor and councillors, will take all this into consideration before entering into any benefit agreement with the NWMO,” Green-Guenette told council during her presentation.
“It is our hope that, all these people don’t want the DGR (Deep Geological Repository) here.”
She adds that a recent petition they conducted was well supported.
“Over 3,300 people from this region have signed our petitions. Hundreds from Dryden.”
Back in November, the Nuclear Waste Management Organization selected the Revell site, about 40 kilometers from Dryden, as the preferred site for a Deep Geological Repository for Canada’s nuclear waste.
