Why some people avoid saying “Super Bowl”

There are two things you can count on every February: Valentine’s Day… and the NFL being VERY protective of the words “Super Bowl.”

It’s almost like saying the name out loud might summon a lawyer in a blazer with a whistle. So a bunch of us suddenly start talking like we’re in a spy movie: “The Big Game.” “That football thing.” “Sunday’s… event.”

And now I’ve got it in my head that if I accidentally say “Super Bowl” too close to the word “Sunday,” I’m going to get a penalty flag thrown right into the studio.
