Work to begin on Keewatin Channel Bridge

Work to rehabilitate the Keewatin Channel Bridge will begin next month.

This is a $9.9 million project.

Park Derochie Inc. will be doing the work.

Greg Breen is the Director of Engineering and Infrastructure and says the work will take about six months to complete.

“This a huge project for the city…it’s going to include sandblasting to clear all the existing corrosion and coating off the bridge,” Breen told Kenora city council’s Committee of the Whole meeting this week.

“There are steel repairs that are going to be completed. All the steel will be re-coated with a protective, anti-corrosive coating.”

Breen says the underside of the bridge will be scaffolded and heated during the winter months, to allow the work to continue.

“Now that surprise some people because you typically don’t do paving or coating work in cold temperatures. But for this project, the contractor is going to be completely scaffolding in a hoarding around the underside of the bridge, and that hoarding is going to be heated for the duration of the project.”

Breen says the bridge will be down to one lane of traffic next month for a couple of weeks to erect the scaffolding and once again in March to take the scaffolding down.
