The origin of ‘Noway’ Way back when his great niece, Shandi was at an age where she would ask for candy, gum, chips, food or even money for any of those. She would ask Shkewtang for any of those when she saw him, he would reply “no way!”. She would ask for other things to see if he would say yes, the answer was always, “no way” and he would laugh. One day, she went up to him and said “I know what your name is”. Intrigued by the statement, he asked “what is it?”. Shandi replied, “no way!!” and he started to laugh at her. Shandi then said “because you always say no way!!”. From that day forward, he was known as Noway to family and as the years went by, he earned the title Papa Noway from the great-grand nieces and nephews.

“I know what Noway means in Ojibway now. It means Shkewtang”. (Shandi at age 4)
