Canada’s monumental World Cup run comes to an end

Canada has been knocked out of the World Cup after losing 3-0 to Morocco but not after a monumental run that saw them get further than they had ever gone before.

Last week, Canada broke through a major milestone when we overtook South Africa 1-0 in stoppage time, moving onto the round of 16 for the first time.

Nova Scotia’s own Jacob Shaffleburg, of Port Williams, also had a massive showing in the World Cup. He helped score a goal in the game against Qatar on June 18 with a deflection. Canada finished that match with a 6-0 win.

Canada Soccer said getting knocked out of the tournament Saturday feels more like the beginning of a story than the end of one.

Over the last few weeks, the entire country has fallen in love with the team, the organization said in a social media post. Living rooms and streets were packed with fans, they added, and many people discovered a new love for the sport.

“We’ve always believed this was a football country. Now, we know it is,” they said.

“History wasn’t just made on the pitch. It was made in homes, schools, parks, pubs, and communities across this country. It was made every time someone chose to believe.”

In Canada’s final game Saturday, we were dominating in the first half with four shots on goal compared to Morocco’s one.

But 50 minutes into the game Azzedine Ounahi scored the first goal for Morocco.

Canada got a free kick opportunity 77 minutes in which could have tight things up. Jonathan David took the shot, and it soared over Morocco’s net.

About 82 minutes in, Morocco scored again. And just three minutes after that, they had landed the final goal of the game, finishing 3-0.

Through the entire tournament, our captain Alphonso Davies only played in last week‘s game against South Africa. He was injured earlier in the season.
