Every child in the Kenora area will now be able to enjoy the Rotary Playground on Coney Island!
The grand opening of this new inclusive and accessible play space took place last week.
The new playground has…
A green rubber tile surface for accessibility and durability
A walkway from the boardwalk to the playground that enables easy access for mobility devices
Calm zones with sensory-driven play elements, a shaded area, quiet play and a kid-friendly picnic tabletop
Three stainless steel slides, including a wide slide for caregiver assistance. Stainless steel was chosen to prevent damage to cochlear implants
Two wheelchair-accessible ramps with rails
A swing set with multiple seating options and a disc seat for versatile positioning, traditional belted and toddler seats, and a shared parent and child swing seat
Accessible stairs and shorter deck step rises
Vine climbs, rope bridges, stepping pods and monkey bars
This playground has been intentionally designed to reduce barriers and to promote access across different ages, stages, abilities, sensory needs, and language preferences, ensuring that everyone can participate fully.
The project was funded by the federal Enabling Accessibility Fund, the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation, and the Kenora Rotary Club.
