The Woodland Arena in Vermilion Bay should have a new ice plant later this fall.
Chief Administrative Officer of the Municipality of Machin Max Nagy says they have been fortunate in getting government grants to cover most of the cost.
“It’s already reached its useful life, so we decided to get a rough idea of what the costs (an ice plant) would be and then apply for the grants,” explains Nagy.
“We got very lucky. We able to get $500,000 from the NOHF and $140,000 from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.”
Nagy adds that the funding will cover most of the cost of purchasing and installing the new ice plant.
“That’s a project right there where we recognized the need. Last year, so many times our arena manager, she was out there having to deal with that (ice) plant shutting down. The current one we have, it’s not designed for being in our temperatures and the harsh winters.”
Nagy says the new ice plant will cost in the range of $740,000 and be installed by the end of October.
