Kenora Pickleball Club – Wednesday and Thursday Ladders

By Jim Mowrey, Jun Laffin and James Tkachyk

Wednesday Morning Ladders: A nice morning to be out playing Ladders. The wind was pretty brisk at times but still nicer than the “HOT HOT HOT….

Apparently the wind bothers left handed players more than right hand players. Yes, I am “left handed”. I had a terrible time on the courts… it had to be the wind !!!! I had way too many unforced errors and so I ended up on the bottom of the pile. Brad Morton had no problem at all as he finished on top of Group 1. He only lost his first game.. Nice job Brad..

Craig Liske only lost 1 game in Group 2, and that was 11-10… not bad at all. See you in Group 1 next week.

Robin Rademaker only lost two games in Group 3 to edge ahead of Blair Hutchings, who also only lost two games…

Orlo Mejia only lost one game in Group 4 to beat out Duncan Ross by 1 point. Duncan lost two games but was still right there. It is always that one easy shot to win the game and you missed it, then the other team comes back…. happens all the time.

I just want to mention that as the games get closer, try to be honest with the “out” calls. I noticed several times in our Group 1 and two calls in a row in Group 2 that were definitely ‘IN’ but were quickly called out. I have missed a few calls I know… Murray A.can attest to that !!, but the idea is to play the game of Pickleball, not to play a game of who can make the most “OUT” calls to get a victory.

Robin Rademaker is our A & W Player of the day winning in Group 3. She wins a burger, fries and drink from the local A & W… Next week is Group 2’s turn…

Wednesday Evening Ladders: Unfortunately, it started to rain during the last game, so we do not have the evening winners!

But it’s worth mentioning Korelle and Devon’s big comeback from 6-10 and winning 11-10 against Derek and Jun in Game 5!

Boston Pizza “Player of the Day” is Alex Day with awesome gets from baseline to the just-over-the-net drop shot. Great gets, Alex!

Thursday Morning Ladders: 24 members attended ladders play on a nice day for pickleball.  The winds did get a bit stronger throughout the morning’s play making it a challenge to adjust to the conditions.  Murray Bamforth made a return to the top of Group 1 finishing 2 points ahead of Wayne Jones.  In Group 2 there was a tie for top spot with both John Fraser and Catherine Jones scoring the same.  Polly Craik won Group 3 with a 3 point lead over Wendy Thompson.

This was the 12th week of play for the Thursday Morning group (We have not missed a Thursday this summer) and it is the final prize for me to hand out to the Player of the Week. This weeks 901 West Side prize goes to Polly Craik for winning Group 3.  In total 12 prizes handed out with a different winner each week.  Thanks to Jim Mowrey for organizing the certificates, and Boston Pizza, 901 West Side and A and W for providing them each week this summer.
