Over 400 motorists caught speeding on northwestern Ontario highways

A stepped-up traffic enforcement initiative during the August long weekend resulted in Provincial Police laying over 460 charges across northwestern Ontario.

Officers focused on the “Big Four” violations – impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving (including speeding), and seatbelt compliance.

Almost 90% (404 charges) issued in the region were for speeding.

Seven motorists were tagged with stunt racing for excessive speeding.

In one case, an motorist was clocked doing 135 kilometres an hour in the Nolalu area, which is posted at 80 km/hr.

A motorcyclist was stopped doing 165 km/hr on the Trans Canada Highway near Upsala.

Both individuals were issued 30-day driver’s licence suspensions and their vehicles were impounded for 14 days.

Another 31 people were cited for seatbelt violations.

Eighteen motorists were stopped for driving while impaired.

Provincial Police also issued four charges against motorists for failing to move over for emergency vehicles.
