May 10, 1923, to April 17, 2026
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts we announce the passing of our dad, Ed Kasprick on April 17. 2026 at Wiigwas Elder and Senior Care with his family by his side. Dad was born at home in Rosedale, Manitoba, just north of Neepawa, Manitoba on May 10, 1923.
Dad enjoyed his family life on their farm when he was a young man growing up in Eden, Manitoba and also loved sharing many stories about dealing with livestock, hauling firewood in the winter with his team of horses, seeding the crops in the spring, hunting trips and witching for water, it was hard work but it set the tone for the rest of Dad’s working years.
There were many struggles in those days, and when Dad was 18, he survived a big one, he had contracted polio. With not much money and limited medical opportunities, his parents did the best they could but felt hopeless. Dad’s Uncle insisted that he should be taken to Brandon where there was better care, and they agreed. There Dad was wrapped in hot packs and put into a medically induced coma for many weeks, with daily care he finally pulled through with no long-lasting symptoms. Grandma and Grandpa where so grateful to have their son home again.
In 1950 he married our mom (Mavis) at Clear Lake, Manitoba and traveled to Kenora for their honeymoon, they loved the area so much they made a permanent move to Keewatin in 1956 after living in Neepawa Manitoba for the first few years of their marriage along with Gregg and Randy.
Dad worked as a heavy equipment operator (he was contracted to clear the land to construct 5th Street in Keewatin, Water Tower hill) and he also worked at the Lake of the Woods Milling Company. After a year or so he landed a job at Minnesota and Ontario Paper Company (Mando) and that secured his and mom’s future to build a home and raise a family which now included Tim and Debra. Dad made many friends through his work and involvement with the Lake of the Woods Elks Lodge, which also gave him (and mom) the opportunity to travel to different conventions across Canada and the United States. Dad and mom did a “once in a lifetime” trip to England in 1980, which he still told stories and shared memories to this day. Dad retired in September 1986, and kept busy with building, gardening, fishing, golfing (which he did until he was 95) and could repair most anything that needed a tune up. He was always available to lend a hand with any project you needed help with, but most importantly he loved socializing and going dancing with Mavis. After mom passed in 2007, and with dad being retired also gave him lots of time to travel out west and keep in touch with family and friends. He was a true Toronto Blue Jays fan and was lucky enough to attend the first round of the 1992 World Series in Minneapolis, he had many stories to tell about that adventure. Even to this day, we were still hearing those stories, as well as many others.
Dad loved having visitors pop in at his home in Lakeside for conversation, a cocktail and a laugh or two. Dad’s memory was fantastic, it was so great to listen to all the stories from his past, he could remember dates, names and places from all sorts of events throughout his life.
Ed is predeceased by his wife, Mavis Bland, son Gregg, parents Frances and Mike, brother Lorne, sister- in-law Susie, nephews Carmen and Bob and niece Dorothy, and his in-laws Lillian and Earl Bland.
Surviving and celebrating their dad’s life, he leaves behind sons Randy, Tim (Kim) his granddaughter Tatyana, and daughter Debra (Stash). Dad will also be missed by Karen Percy and her children William, Gord and Anna, and his close cousin and friend Gerry Kasprick and several nieces and nephews. Although his immediate family was small, Dad came from a very large family background, his father Mike had 17 brothers and sisters and his mother Frances had 11 siblings, so Dad is leaving a very large family tree.
Ed’s family would like to thank Dr. Shannon Wiebe for her many years of caring for our dad, he thought you where the “best”, also the Staff at Wiigwas Elder and Senior Care, who always went above and beyond with their care and compassion for all residents. Also, Brandi Milko NP and Dr. Sawatzky at Wiigwas, who kept a watchful eye over dad in his final days. We are forever grateful.
Dad had a life well lived. He will truly be missed by all who were lucky enough to have known him, but he will never be forgotten.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, May 15, 2026 at the Super 8 – Minis Hall from 1:00 – 5:00 pm. A private family Interment will follow at a later date.
There is a bridge of memories, from here to heaven above,
That keeps you very close to us; it’s called the bridge of love.
We hold you close within our hearts, and there you will remain,
To walk with us throughout our lives, until we meet again.
