Severe thunderstorm watch for NWO: “Toonie-sized” hail & heavy winds in forecast

Environment Canada is predicting with a high level of confidence that a severe thunderstorm will strike northwestern Ontario Wednesday afternoon and evening.

The warning is issued for the following areas:

  • Sioux Lookout – Savant Lake
  • Dryden – Ignace
  • Seine River Village – Mine Centre
  • Thunder Bay
  • Lake Nipigon – Wabakimi
  • Atikokan – Upsala – Quetico
  • Superior West
  • Nipigon – Rossport

“Toonie-sized” hail and wind gusts up to 90 km/h are in the forecast as of 2 pm Wednesday.

Environment Canada warns utility outages are possible.

“Be prepared for severe weather,” Environment Canada wrote in an alert Wednesday afternoon. “If threatening weather approaches, take cover in a basement or interior room. If outside, protect yourself from flying debris and hail. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. When thunder roars, go indoors!”
