Shoal Lake #40 opens new housing development in Kenora

Kenora’s newest housing development has officially opened.

Shoal Lake #40 has opened a housing complex on the top of 9th Street North behind the Evergreen Community Club.

Chief Herb Green says they collaborated with the Niiwin Wendaanimok (Four Winds Partnership) to provide their students with a place to live.

“We constructed a facility to house people…our people…our youth to stay within the area where we can access education,” Green said at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new building.

Green says they had a number of partners to make this happen.

“We are collaborating with Niiwin Wendaanimok to bring our students in for training, get them ready for the workforce and providing them a home so they’re near the training center, which we’re hoping to get one day, and also it gives them a shot to be in the Kenora area.”

The housing complex has 26 units, of which 15 are studio unit for the students and 11 are one-bedroom apartments.
