Treaty #3 requests meeting with PM on DGR

The decision by the federal government to potentially designate the Deep Underground Repository as a project of national intest is not sitting well with Grand Council Treaty #3.

The Grand Chief of Treaty #3, Frances Kavanaugh has written an open letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney.

In it, he invites both the PM and the Major Projects Office to discuss the potential designation under the Building Canada Act.

The DGR is being proposed by the Nuclear Waste Management Organization to store spent nuclear fuel in an area between Ignace and the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation.

In the letter, Kavanaugh says it has never been their duty to take on the responsibility of storing Canada’s nuclear waste, which has been produced entirely outside the Treaty #3 territory.

He says their concerns are best decided upon through discussion and not through the court system.
